Uber
During a cold and taxi less night in Paris, Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp decided to come up with a solution to every commuter’s dilemma. Founded in 2009, Uber is a ride-hailing service that allows users to set up pick-up and drop-off points with the tap of a finger. Thanks to Uber, commuting has been made a lot easier, but it is more than just that.
Uber has also created an opportunity for people to make a little extra by becoming one of their drivers. The ride-hailing app has since expanded with a food delivery service called UberEats. Uber is now being used by over 8 million people in hundreds of cities across 65 countries.
While Facebook is still the social media king, there is no questioning the fact that its subsidiary, Instagram, is the dominant force on mobile devices. Instagram allows us to document our best moments. It also allows us to connect with brands and companies from all over the globe. It may never reach the popularity of Facebook, but Instagram has forever changed what we do before we eat and what we do after we workout.
Angry Birds
The mobile game scene is dominated by the likes of Mobile Legends, Fortnite, and PUBG now, but before these titles, came Angry Birds. In 2009, Finnish company Rovio Entertainment launched Angry Birds. The game’s premise was simple, you shoot birds towards pig fortresses via swiping motion. It was intuitive, it was a hit and it was historic.
Years after it launched, Angry Birds became a pop culture giant. It spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs, as well as partnerships with other franchises such as Star Wars. While its games no longer top the charts now, Angry Birds will forever be known as the video game that put mobile games on the map.
Tinder
It may be odd to see Tinder on this list but if you think about it, the app has greatly changed the world of dating. Finding a person that meets your standards has never been easier, thanks to the app. Who knew that swiping right could lead you to the person that you might eventually marry?
Google Maps
Getting lost seems almost impossible at this point as long as you have a smartphone, a decent connection, and Google Maps. It is a detailed map of the world featuring landmarks such as restaurants, malls, museums, and more. Google Maps is also capable of giving you a multitude of travel options when going from one place to another. It’s hard to imagine what travelling to a foreign country would be like without Google Maps now.
