Swedish online music streaming giant Spotify has officially launched in India, in both free and paid tiers.
Spotify is a Sweden-based music streaming platform which was originally launched in October 2008. It has been the top music service provider globally when it comes to the subscriber base. As of February 2019, it had 207 million total monthly active users, including 96 million paying subscribers.
The music streamer is providing new users to sign up for the 30-day free trial. It has premium membership plans for existing users. Spotify Premium membership costs Rs. 119 per month and Rs 1,189 for a full year.
Musical categories in Spotify includes pop, rock, and indie, along with India-specific genres like Tamil and Bollywood.
It competes with companies such as Gaana, JioSaavn, Hungama and Airtel’s Wynk. It also faces competition from tech giants Apple, Amazon and Google Play, who have also been offering online music streaming services.
In India, the number of online music listeners is expected to climb to 273 million by 2020, according to consulting firm Deloitte.
While earlier the Spotify app was not available for download in India, now the same can be downloaded on both iOS and Android devices. Earlier, Indian users streamed Spotify using VPN services.
